Good motion usually answers one of three questions.

The three useful questions

What changed.

Where should I look.

What can I interact with.

Once an animation stops answering one of those, it starts charging rent instead of earning it.

Atmosphere still needs discipline

That is why so many stylish interfaces feel weird after a week. The motion was designed like decoration, not information.

I still like atmospheric motion. A page can arrive softly. A border can brighten when focus moves. A list row can tighten when hovered. These things help.

What does not help is turning every transition into a trailer.
